North San Diego County is a string of small beach cities, and Carlsbad is the one most families know. LEGOLAND California, which opened here in 1999, is built for children roughly two to twelve, with rides, a water park, an aquarium and miniature cities made from millions of bricks. Next door, the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch cover a hillside with rows of giant ranunculus that bloom in stripes of color in spring, usually from about March into May. Carlsbad Village, near the train station, has a walkable main street a few blocks from the beach, and the lagoons around town are good for paddling and birding.
About an hour inland, the Temecula Valley is Southern California's best-known wine region. Ocean breezes funnel through gaps in the coastal mountains and cool the vineyards at night, and more than 40 wineries line Rancho California Road and De Portola Road, many with restaurants, inns and event lawns. Weekends are busy, so a tour with a driver or a weekday visit makes tasting easier. Early-morning hot air balloon flights over the vines are a local tradition when the weather allows. Most wineries charge a tasting fee, and many offer a cheese plate or a full lunch, so it is easy to make an afternoon of two or three stops.
Old Town Temecula, with its wooden sidewalks and Western-style storefronts, is the place for lunch, antiques and a Saturday farmers market. The combination works well on a Southern California road trip between Orange County and San Diego or the desert: a day of beach and LEGOLAND in Carlsbad, then a night in wine country before heading on.
